The hip hop world has been dealt another major blow with the passing of Keith Elam aka Guru. On Feb. 28th, Guru suffered a heart attack and following surgery days later fell into a coma. He awoke from the coma but died last night after a long battle with cancer.
Guru was born in Boston and was the former member of the legendary hip hop group Gang Starr, which released such classic albums as Step In The Arena, Hard To Earn, & Daily operation. In 1993, he released his first solo album, Jazzmatazz, Vol. 1. The album featured collaborations with legendary artists Donald Byrd, N’Dea Davenport and Roy Ayers. The name Guru stands for “Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal”.
Even though Guru resided in Boston & DJ Premier hailed from Texas, they have deep roots in the New York hip hop culture, and along with such producers as Pete Rock, Large Professor and Diamond D, they are known for creating that “New York” hip hop sound.
